Burlesque originally started as a peice of literary, dramatic or musical work which intended to cause laughter in the audiences. The term 'Burlesque' was later refered to as a variety show format. It became popular between 1860 and 1940.

The shows would eventually become about bawdy comedy and female striptease. Burlesque has even featured in fims such as 1972's Caberet, 1979's All that Jazz and 2010's Burlesque.
